Faculty Member, Philosophy
About
My research interests are in Philosophy and Music, Aesthetics, Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Law. I am particularly interested in problems surrounding performance and interpretation. My first book, *Music in Public: How Performances Shape Democracy,* is under contract with Oxford University Press and argues that the performance of musical works should be understood as authoritative and critical contributions to what I call a musical public sphere. It draws on and develops concepts from political philosophy to deal more fruitfully with some of the most pressing questions contemporary philosophy of music and musical performance.
I am beginning work on a second book project, *Listeners, Critics, and Judges,* that fills out the 18th-19th Century philosophical background of the “musical public sphere” and its historical and conceptual entanglement with the liberal public sphere.
I have published and am currently working on articles on interpretation in musical performance and law, expression of ethical character in music, authority and musical performance, the status of religious and aesthetic reasons in public deliberation, and reasonable disagreement.
